Tutorial N° 36 : Domaine of the "Château de la Chasse" - Val d'Oise .


Material : Arches fine grain watercolor paper, 300g / m2, shaper brush (rubber modeling brush) and masking eraser.


Colors : aureolin yellow, ocher, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, burnt umber, burnt sienna, sepia, and payne gray.


Brush: a Raphaël Kolinsky brush "803", pure small gray, 3/0, a Raphaël Kolinsky 8408 brush and n ° 2 Da Vinci small gray pure series 418 n ° 1.

3. Painting of the sky. After having wet the sky abundantly, apply a wash of the cobalt blue mixture and a touch of cerulean blue.Let dry.



4. Put masking gum on the foreground herbs and leave horizontal areas in reserve on the water. Letdry.



5. Apply very diluted aureoline yellow and ocher washes as an undercoat over the vegetation and the castle. Let dry.



6. Prepare three greens : the first aureolin yellow and cobalt blue, the second aureolin yellow and more cobalt blue and a touch of emerald green, the third adding a touch of indigo to the previous one. First paint the foliage yellow, red by applying a mixture of yellow ocher, aureolin and burnt sienna, then continue with the greens, taking inspiration from the photo.Let dry.



7. Start painting the foreground using the brush vertically and a fragmented touch to suggest vegetation. Paint with light greens, yellow ocher and burnt sienna.



8. Painting of the castle, in the lights, apply yellow ocher, then in the damp burnt sienna and in the shadows, add payne gray.Let dry. The roofs are painted with a mixture of burnt umber and a touch of sepia.



9. Painting of the the water using the brush horizontally and put ocher then add dark green. Let dry.



10. Paint the vegetation in front of the castle, the touch is fragmented and vertical, we use light, dark greens and ocher. For colors, see comments for number 7.



11. Remove the masking gum. Detail the castle with sepia, shade the parts under the roofs, mark the windows, fireplaces and doors. Strengthen water using dark green, foregrounds are enhanced with dark green and burnt umber.



12. Reinforce foreground details with a thinner brush using dark green and burnt sienna.


Good watercolor with this unusual castle!
