Tutorial N°8 : How to paint a bird in winter.

Materials :
Paints watercolour Winsor et Newton (pans or tubes, is a matter of preference). Cerulean, alizarin grimson, burnt sienna, raw sienna, payne's gray, burnt umber, sepia, french ultramarine, ochre, aureolin, orange, vermillon and black. Paper : sennelier 300 gr. Brushes : squirrel (Raphaël n° 3/0), one little sable brush (Raphaël n°1 kolinsky) for détail, masking fluid, (shaper usefull for applying, see photo 2). Palette to prepare colours, pencils HB, 2 glasses of water: one to damp the paper and the other to clean the brushes. Tissues.
1. Draw the bird, and the branch of the tree with the pencil (HB).

2. Paint the light area of the bird and the branches of the tree with mixes of ochre and aureolin.

3. Add more orange on the bird and start to paint the blue area with cerulean.

4. Paint the moss on the branch with green (mix of Cerulean, french ultramarine and aureolin), Brown (burnt sienna and burnt umber). Paint the shadows of the snow with a mix of french ultramarine and alizarin grimson.

5. The depth in the branches is achieved by adding mixes of warm brown (burnt sienna) and cold brown (burnt umber and payne's gray). Paint the paws with burnt sienna and sepia.

6. Paint the feathers with sepia, add orange on the body. Add colour to create depth areas with wash of brown on the top of the head and the body.

7. A touch of sepia and black is Added to the most dark areas : Feather, eyes and beak.

8. Another painting with the use of cerulean at the background.
